How to Play Crossword GO

Crossword GO is an arrow-word crossword. Instead of a numbered list of clues beside the grid, the clues sit inside the grid, and a small arrow tells you which way the answer runs.

Reading the grid

Every board has three kinds of squares:

  • Clue squares hold a short clue (or a picture). The arrow points to the first letter of the answer: → means the answer runs across, ↓ means it runs down.
  • Letter squares are where you type. Most letters belong to two answers — one across and one down — so every word you solve helps with the next.
  • Empty squares are blocked. They don’t belong to any answer.

An answer continues until it hits the edge of the board or the next clue square. Some clue squares hold two clues — one for each direction.

Main levels usually use a grid about 8 columns wide and 10 rows tall with around 30 clues, so each board is a quick, satisfying solve.

Types of clues

Definition clues

The most common kind: a plain definition or synonym, like AWAKENED → WOKE. Match the grammar — a past-tense clue wants a past-tense answer, a plural clue wants a plural answer.

Fill-in-the-blank clues

Clues with __ ask you to complete a phrase or word: __ AND GREET → MEET. Some blanks sit in the middle of a word, like ACCOMM__TE, where the answer is only the missing letters (ODA). These are often the fastest wins on a board.

Initials clues

This is the one that confuses new players. When an answer has only one or two squares and the clue isn’t a blank, the answer is usually the first letter of each word in the clue: MACHINE → M, TOO MUCH → TM, PRODUCT NAME → PN. Once you know the trick, these are free letters.

Picture clues

Some clue squares show a small image instead of text. Name what you see — keep it simple and think of the most common word. Many pictures also show a word with letters missing (a fence labelled F__CE) — then you only enter the missing letters, EN. More on picture clues →

Using this site while you play

Open your level, then use Hint to uncover one letter at a time. Only press Reveal when you really need the whole word. Each letter you reveal also fills in on the solved grid, so you can see which crossing words it helps with.
